The Diplomat, a brand new drama from Alibi, premieres on February 28 at 9 p.m.
A slew of A-listers, including Sophie Rundle, Danny Sapani, Steven Cree, Serena Manteghi, Dylan Brady, Isak Férriz, Laia Costa, and Philipp Boos, are featured in the UKTV Original series.
In The Diplomat, Laura Simmonds (Rundle) and her friend and fellow Barcelona Consul Alba Ortiz (Manteghi) strive to defend British nationals in distress in Spain’s most popular tourist destination. The constant flow of unexpected and complex cases that come through the Consulate doors test Laura and Alba’s diplomatic talents to the limit, as they must play multiple roles (lawyer, counselor, and cop).
In the first episode, Jay Sutherland, a young British bartender working on a yacht in Barcelona’s posh harbor, is murdered. Laura stands by Colin (Sapani), the boy’s devastated father, despite the fact that the Spanish police are convinced the boy’s death was an unfortunate accident. As more and more proof surfaces, Laura runs into unexpected opposition and learns that the plot to cover up the truth extends all the way to the highest levels of the British establishment. Laura is aware that there may be repercussions for disclosing the truth about Jay’s death.
The Diplomat is created and written by Ben Richards. Episodes 3 & 4 are written by Lauren Klee. The directors are Jill Robertson and Jennie Paddon and the series is produced by Ken Horn for World Productions, part of ITV Studios. Executive producers are Simon Heath, Ben Richards, Emma Luffingham and Philippa Collie Cousins. BBC Studios is handling distribution internationally.
