The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards, initially set to air this Sunday, has been abruptly postponed due to the raging wildfires currently engulfing the Los Angeles area. The ceremony, a significant event for television enthusiasts eager to see which shows and actors will snag the coveted awards, will now take place on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
While the delay is undoubtedly a disruption, the shift allows for a moment to acknowledge the gravity of the situation. CCA CEO Joey Berlin, in announcing the postponement, rightly noted the “profound impact” of the fires on the community. It’s a sobering reminder that even Hollywood’s glitziest events are not immune to real-world crises.
When the Critics Choice Awards finally do air, all eyes will be on FX’s Shōgun. The historical drama leads the pack with six nominations, including Best Drama Series and nods for five of its cast members. Having already cleaned up at the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Television Critics Association Awards, Shōgun is clearly a force to be reckoned with.
But Shōgun isn’t the only contender vying for attention. Abbott Elementary, Disclaimer, Hacks, The Diplomat, The Penguin, and What We Do in the Shadows are nipping at its heels, each boasting four nominations. The race is on.
Comedienne Chelsea Handler will steer the ship as host when the ceremony finally airs live on E! at 7 p.m. ET from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. For those who miss the live broadcast, the ceremony will also be available to stream on Peacock the following day.
