Cross Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: “Chasing Ghosts”

Cross First Look

The Fanboy killer’s twisted game of revenge takes center stage in “Chasing Ghosts,” as Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) races against time to find Shannon Witmer (Eloise Mumford) and unravel the increasingly tangled web of the killer’s motives. This week’s Cross delivers a potent mix of procedural thrills and intimate character moments, exploring the human cost of obsession and the delicate balance between justice and vengeance.

A key piece of the puzzle falls into place when a dress discovered at Maria’s gravesite is linked to Deirdre Nolan, a woman driven to suicide in prison after suffering abuse at the hands of CO Brenda Leeland. This connection suggests a deeply personal motive for the Fanboy, who appears to be targeting those involved in Nolan’s tragic story.

While Cross and his team connect the dots, Shannon remains trapped in the Fanboy’s macabre world. The killer’s unsettlingly meticulous nature is on full display as he meticulously plans his next move, viewing his gruesome acts as artistic creations, painstakingly documented in his creepy scrapbook – he has a creepy twisted admiration for other serial killers.

Cross, feeling the pressure, makes a risky move by leaking Shannon’s disappearance to the press. While intended to provoke the Fanboy, the decision backfires, sparking accusations of racial bias in the media and further straining the already tense relationship between law enforcement and the Black community.

Amidst the darkness of the case, a glimmer of light emerges as Cross’s family attempts to reclaim a sense of normalcy with a karaoke night. The scene offers a touching respite from the grim reality of the investigation, allowing Cross and Elle (Samantha Walkes) a chance to connect on a deeper level and providing a much-needed reminder of the human connections at stake.

“Chasing Ghosts” offers a compelling glimpse into the mind of a killer while exploring the toll the case takes on Cross and his team. The episode concludes with a cliffhanger, luckily though all 8 episodes are available so I can dive straight in to episode 5.
