Another Tuesday, another descent into the money pit — er, rabbit hole — that is Oak Island. This week, the Lagina brothers and their intrepid team seem to be stumbling upon a few more potentially significant discoveries. Will these finally unlock the centuries-old mystery, or are we just setting ourselves up for another season of tantalizing near-misses?
In the upcoming episode, “Brick By Brick,” the swamp, that perennial source of soggy intrigue, coughs up something new: a structure that, according to the ever-optimistic team, resembles a container. Now, “container” is a pretty broad term. Could it be a centuries-old Tupperware party gone wrong? Or perhaps the lost Ark of the Covenant, repurposed for maritime storage? Okay, probably not either of those, but the find has certainly piqued the interest of the Oak Island crew. And if history has taught us anything about this show, it’s that even the smallest anomaly can be spun into a full-blown theory involving Knights Templar, pirate gold, or some other suitably dramatic historical narrative.
Over in the Money Pit, the search for the elusive Chappell Vault appears to be gaining traction (or at least creating some interesting air pockets). The team reports finding a void, which, in Oak Island terms, could mean anything from a small empty space to the entrance to a hidden chamber overflowing with ancient artifacts. Let’s face it, on Oak Island, even finding a solid rock is cause for celebration. We’ll have to wait and see if this void leads to anything more substantial than another round of speculative drilling.
Of course, the Laginas aren’t exactly strangers to interpreting ambiguous data as evidence of imminent treasure. They’ve built a whole brand around the art of the near-miss, the tantalizing clue, the almost-but-not-quite discovery. But hey, that’s the Oak Island magic, right? The possibility, however remote, that there’s actually something buried beneath that muddy, mysterious island is enough to keep us coming back for more.
“The Curse of Oak Island” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on History.
