The second episode of D-Day 80, titled Tribute to the Fallen, airs on BBC One on Wednesday, 5 June 2024, at 8:30 pm. The program commemorates the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, honouring the courage and sacrifice of the allied servicemen who took part in this pivotal moment in history.
On the evening of June 5, 1944, thousands of allied soldiers waited anxiously for the signal to embark on their mission. In the ensuing 24 hours, these brave troops pushed the limits of ingenuity, bravery, and sacrifice, achieving the unthinkable. Eighty years later, a reflective event will be held at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Bayeux to honour the memories of those who participated and to pay tribute to those who never returned home.
The Princess Royal, accompanied by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, will join actors, musicians, and currently serving military personnel in this poignant tribute. The event will feature readings, music, and veteran testimony, building towards a unique and powerful moment of remembrance. As darkness falls, a symbolic lighting ceremony will take place, with each of the 4,600 headstones being individually illuminated, reflecting the price paid for the success of D-Day.
The UK section of the broadcast will mirror this lighting effect, presenting a D-Day-themed show accompanied by live musical performances that capture the significance of the occasion. Presented by Kirsty Young, the program will also include accessible commentary for the blind and partially sighted, provided by Petroc Trelawny.
