Bertie Carvel’s ever-sharp DCI Adam Dalgliesh returns to Acorn TV this December 2, and this time, he’s not just cracking cases – he’s taking charge behind the camera. Season 3 of Dalgliesh features three fresh two-part mysteries adapted from P.D. James’ novels, each richly evoking the mood of late-1970s Britain.

From the hushed halls of a scandal-plagued seminary in “Death in Holy Orders” to the politically charged tensions of a family drama in “Cover Her Face” (where Carvel makes his directorial debut), Dalgliesh finds himself navigating intricate webs of deceit. The season culminates with “Devices and Desires,” a chilling investigation into a series of deaths near a nuclear power station. As the specter of Thatcherism begins to rise, these cases offer a fascinating window into a society poised for momentous change.

Carvel’s trusted Detective Sergeants, played by Carlyss Peer and Alistair Brammer, are back by his side. They’re joined by a formidable supporting cast, including Anton Lesser, Lloyd Owen, and Claire Goose, ensuring each scene crackles with tension. With Helen Edmundson returning as lead writer and executive producer, alongside new writers Colette Kane and Kam Odedra, the series looks to retain its trademark blend of intricate plots and intriguing character studies.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this new season is undoubtedly Carvel’s move into the director’s chair. Will his transition be as seamless as his portrayal of the enigmatic Dalgliesh? Audiences can decide for themselves when the series lands on Acorn TV on December 2.

Dalgliesh is a New Pictures production for Acorn TV. Executive producers are Elaine Pyke, Willow Grylls, Bertie Carvel, Catherine Mackin, and Bea Tammer. Commissioned by Sebastian Cardwell for Paramount.
