On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 8:00 p.m., Oxygen’s Dateline: Secrets Uncovered will air an investigative episode titled “What Happened to Anton Black?” examining the tragic death of 19-year-old Anton Black during a police custody incident.
On September 15, 2018, a couple walking past the Choptank River Bridge in Greensboro, Maryland, witnessed a disturbing incident. They reported seeing a young man being forcibly dragged by an older individual. That young man was Anton Black, and the events that unfolded that day would lead to his untimely death and a subsequent federal lawsuit.
Distressing police body camera footage captures the moment officers and a civilian restrain an unarmed Black in front of his home, as his mother looks on, unable to intervene. Black’s desperate calls for help continue until his body suddenly goes limp, a chilling moment captured on camera.
The initial ruling on Black’s cause of death was “undetermined” by former Maryland medical examiner David Fowler. However, this was later reclassified as a homicide by Dr. Andrew Baker, the medical examiner who conducted George Floyd’s autopsy.
The tragic incident sheds light on police brutality and the urgent need for accountability and reform in law enforcement. One of the responding officers, Thomas Webster, has a concerning history. In 2013, while working as a police officer in Delaware, he faced charges of second-degree assault due to body camera footage that showed him kicking a Black man.
