NBC’s gamble on a reality competition show built around the somewhat dusty “Deal or No Deal” format paid off last season. So, naturally, they’re back for more. “Deal or No Deal Island” returns with a two-hour premiere on Tuesday, January 7, at 8 PM ET/PT before settling into its regular 9 PM slot the following week.
This season boasts a new, supposedly more ruthless Banker (a woman this time, in a casting choice that feels… pointed) and a fresh batch of contestants, including reality TV veterans like Parvati Shallow and “Dr. Will” Kirby. These folks know how to play the game, which, if you’re unfamiliar, involves contestants finding hidden briefcases full of cash and then, well, playing “Deal or No Deal” with the mysterious Banker.
With over $200 million in potential winnings up for grabs, the stakes are ridiculously high. Host Joe Manganiello, also an executive producer, presides over the proceedings with the right blend of enthusiasm and bemusement. It will be fascinating to see if these reality TV pros can outsmart the Banker or if they’ll fall prey to the same temptations that have undone so many before them.
