A death in 1979 Saudi Arabia, officially deemed an accident, still raises questions 45 years later. Channel 4’s new documentary, Death in the Desert: The Nurse Helen Mystery, airing Monday, June 23, at 9:00 PM, sets out to examine the suspicious circumstances surrounding the passing of 23-year-old British nurse Helen Smith.

Helen’s apparent fall from a balcony in Jeddah was quickly ruled accidental by Saudi authorities. However, the official narrative failed to quiet the murmurs of foul play. The case became a tabloid sensation in the UK, sparking accusations that the Thatcher government prioritized lucrative oil deals over the pursuit of justice for a British citizen.

The documentary digs into what was known, what was done, and what might have been suppressed for political reasons.
