In this fourth episode of the second run of Designing the Hebrides, we meet artist Mike and his teacher wife, Kate, who have called the idyllic island of Iona home for the past two decades. Together, they run Iona Wool, an ethical local wool products business. While their shop serves its purpose, it lacks the magical touch of designer Banjo, whose challenge is to create a modern Hebridean design that enhances the warmth and beauty of the woollens on display.
Banjo’s signature style often features dark and richly coloured palettes, but for this project, he must adapt to the client’s preference for a more neutral backdrop that lets their vibrant stock take centre stage. Banjo rises to the occasion by heading to Glasgow, where he discovers dozens of bobbins from old wool mills in a salvage shop. With these unique finds and the help of local tradespeople, he sets out to bring his design vision to life.
Meanwhile, Lisa and Eoghan, part of Banjo’s talented team, contribute their own special touches. Lisa creates woollen lampshades, adding a soft and cosy ambiance to the space, while Eoghan constructs a woven timber wall that elegantly conceals a changing room.
With a tight budget of £6,000 and a short timeframe, will Banjo and his team succeed in transforming the shop and exceeding Mike and Kate’s expectations? Tune in to find out!
