So, Showtime’s giving us Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel series about everyone’s favorite blood-spatter analyst/serial killer. Because apparently, the eight seasons, the revival, and that lumberjack finale weren’t enough. This time, we’re going back to Miami, 1991, for a 10-episode origin story. Mark Sunday, December 15, at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime (or stream it a bit earlier on Paramount+ starting December 13) if you’re still curious about Dexter Morgan’s formative years.
This isn’t Michael C. Hall’s return as Dexter, exactly. Though he is back, providing the character’s inner voice. Patrick Gibson takes on the younger Dexter, learning the ropes of his twisted “code” from dear old Dad, Harry (Christian Slater). Yes, that Christian Slater. The whole thing feels a bit like when a band reunites without the lead singer, but hey, at least Slater’s a recognizable name.
The series throws in a few other familiar faces, just in case nostalgia is your thing. Molly Brown will play the infamous Debra Morgan, with more foul language to be announced later. We’ve also got a smattering of Miami Metro characters in their younger days: Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka, Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, and James Martinez as Angel Batista. Because nothing says “origin story” like a bunch of lab coats in bad ’90s fashion.
Rounding out the cast are Patrick Dempsey as Aaron Spencer, Reno Wilson as Bobby Watt, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Tanya Martin. Now, Tanya Martin is the one bit of actual intrigue here, since the character is a total unknown within the “Dexter” universe. Let’s hope they do something worthwhile with an actual original character, rather than simply wallowing in the past.
Dexter: Original Sin will apparently show us Dexter’s journey from awkward student to, well, awkward serial killer, all while he’s interning at Miami Metro.
Dexter: Original Sin airs Sundays at 10:00 PM-11:00 PM EST on Showtime.
