Discovery Channel is betting that there’s gold in those garbage piles with its new series, “Filthy Fortunes.” The show follows extreme-cleaning specialist Matt Paxton, dubbed the “King of Hoards,” as he wades into America’s most cluttered homes in search of hidden treasures. Think “American Pickers” meets “Hoarders,” with a dash of financial gamble thrown in for good measure.
Paxton, along with appraiser Mike Kelleher and clean-out manager Kayland Brock, tackles the daunting task of sorting through mountains of junk. It’s a risky business – Paxton fronts the clean-out costs, gambling that the unearthed valuables will more than compensate for the expense. But the potential payoff is considerable. So far, the team has uncovered a trove of forgotten treasures, including a Mickey Mantle rookie card, a John Wilkes Booth actor bill card, misprinted stamps, rare coins, vintage toys, and military memorabilia. Their combined finds have yielded nearly half a million dollars in profit.
While the financial stakes are undeniably a draw, “Filthy Fortunes” also aims to document the transformation of the homes and the lives of those who inhabit them. Clearing out the clutter, both physical and emotional, allows for a fresh start, a theme likely to resonate with viewers.
