Channel 4’s Dispatches returns with a timely, if slightly depressing, look at the UK’s shoplifting epidemic in “Britain’s Shoplifting Gangs Exposed.” With thefts reportedly occurring at a staggering rate of 900 per hour – the highest since records began, apparently nobody bothered to track this before – it’s clear something’s amiss. Enter intrepid reporter Matt Shea, ready to infiltrate the organized criminal networks allegedly responsible for a quarter of these incidents, a haul estimated at a cool £1.8 billion in 2023 alone.

Now, we’ve all seen undercover reporters bravely ordering extra foam on their lattes, but Shea’s mission takes him beyond high-street caffeine espionage. This investigation stretches beyond UK borders, putting Shea face-to-face with international players in this surprisingly global game of grab-and-go.

Dispatches aims to do more than just document the five-finger discounts. The program is expected to reveal the masterminds at the top of these pilfering pyramids. Will they be shadowy figures lurking in dimly lit warehouses? Disgruntled retail employees seeking extra-curricular income? Or perhaps, most shocking of all, squirrels trained in the art of stealthy grocery acquisition?

One thing’s for sure: with shoplifting rates soaring, this Dispatches investigation arrives not a moment too soon. Whether it offers viable solutions or simply confirms our darkest suspicions about the rampant spread of tiny shopping carts among the rodent population remains to be seen – just kidding, it probably won’t involve squirrels.

The program airs Monday, November 25, 2024 at 8:00 PM on Channel 4.
