DIY SOS and EastEnders stars team up to transform mental health project in Essex

The DIY SOS team, led by Nick Knowles, is teaming up with stars from EastEnders to support a community project in Harlow, Essex. The project, called Butterfly Effect Well-Being, aims to improve mental health and foster a sense of community. Currently operating out of a portacabin, the project desperately needs a new building to expand its services and help more people struggling with issues like self-harm and social isolation.
The initiative was started by Angela Hannibal, who was inspired to help others after her mother’s suicide. The local council has generously provided an empty building for the project, but it requires extensive repairs and refurbishment.
To transform the building into a welcoming space for the community, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team are calling for the support of local volunteers, including tradespeople and professionals. They are specifically seeking electricians, plumbers, carpenters, plasterers, and decorators. Interested individuals can contact diysosharlow@bbc.co.uk to arrange an appointment with the team before Trades Day on October 3, 2023.
The building transformation will take place from Wednesday, October 25, to Tuesday, October 31, 2023. The EastEnders stars involved in the episode will be announced closer to the broadcast date later in 2023.
