FOX launches its new medical drama, Doc, with the story of Dr. Amy Larsen, Chief of Internal Medicine, whose career and life are upended by a traumatic brain injury.
Rather than accept her fate, Dr. Larsen, with a tenacity bordering on the unbelievable, doubles down on her medical career, even with the significant hurdle of having, you know, brain damage. Her memory is understandably spotty, which I imagine makes diagnosing patients slightly more complicated. This is either a recipe for heartwarming triumph or utter malpractice, and only time will tell which way the scales will tip.
The series, set in Minneapolis’s Westside Hospital, attempts to chart Dr. Larsen’s efforts to rebuild her life and career. While potentially inspiring, one can’t help but wonder about the practicality of a brain-damaged physician running around a hospital making life-altering decisions. Perhaps a quiet administrative role would have been a more prudent path?
