Doco Series Queerstralia Premieres This February on ABC TV
Three part doco series Queerstralia, will premiere on ABC TV this February. It’s presented by comedian Zoë Coombs Marr.
The three-part series will do away with straightwashing and instead explore the interesting and largely unknown Queer history of Australia. You’ll get to know the modern-day heroes who have struggled for change and acceptance, from gay diggers and lesbian convict gangs to cross-dressing bushrangers and iconic drag performers.
The doco offers insight into the ways in which colonisation impacted First Nations sexualities, the ways in which the Queer community has found strength in variety, and the challenges faced by those who are criminalised and pathologize for simply being themselves.
Zoë will meet people who are standing up for what they believe in despite opposition, of love and loss, of hope and perseverance. Learn about the progress and challenges facing our nation.
Queer Australians of all hues will join Zo throughout the series as they reflect on formative experiences and our collective past.
A Guesswork Television production for the ABC. Major production investment from Screen Australia in association with the ABC. Financed with support from VicScreen. Developed with assistance of the Judith Nelson Institute. Created, written and hosted by Zoë Coombs-Marr. Director Stamatia Maroupas. Series Producer Plum Stubbings. Executive Producer Jon Casimir. ABC Manager Factual Julie Hanna.
Airdate: Tuesday 28 February 2023 at 8.30pm on ABC TV.
