Get your tea and crumpets at the ready, Downton Abbey is returning to the big screen for a third instalment. Focus Features and Carnival Films have today (May 13) confirmed that our favourite aristocratic family will be gracing us with their presence once more.
The new film will see the return of a host of beloved characters, with a stellar British cast including Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, and Jim Carter. They’ll be joined by fan favourites Laura Carmichael, Joanne Froggatt, and Brendan Coyle, along with a large contingent of the series regular cast. Maggie Smith will not be returning as the Dowager Countess died in the second movie.
Adding a touch of Hollywood glamour are new cast members Paul Giamatti, reprising his role as the mischievous Harold Levinson, along with Joely Richardson and Dominic West, who will step back into the shoes of Guy Dexter, a role he played in “A New Era.”
Simon Curtis, who guided the previous film, Downton Abbey: A New Era, is set to direct and series creator Julian Fellowes, has penned the script. While there’s no official release date yet, filming is set to commence in May and wrap up by the end of July.
Details of the plot have yet to be revealed.
