So, the second season of Elsbeth draws to a close, and this time, the quirky attorney finds herself knee-deep in the predictable-yet-perversely-satisfying world of Wall Street shenanigans. The victim? A ridiculously wealthy financier who, in a fit of apparent generosity, gave away his fortune. The prime suspect? The victim’s twin brother. Because, naturally. If there’s one thing television has taught us, it’s that twin siblings in finance are rarely up to any good.
The “Finance Bros” episode – yes, that’s the actual title – doesn’t exactly break new ground in the crime procedural genre. It’s a standard “whodunit,” with a dash of high-finance flavoring that feels more like a garnish than a core ingredient. But the real meat of this finale, and the thing that might keep some viewers mildly invested, is the ongoing saga of Elsbeth’s entanglement with the Van Ness case. This subplot, has been simmering in the background, threatening to boil over and scald our protagonist. It is what it is.
The writers are turning up the heat on Elsbeth, creating a sense of professional peril that, frankly, feels a tad manufactured. Still, it does add something to the proceedings, elevating the finale above a mere standalone murder mystery. Will Elsbeth solve the case of the philanthropic financier and his potentially murderous twin? Almost certainly. Will she escape the clutches of the Van Ness situation unscathed? That’s a bit less clear, and perhaps the only genuine question mark hanging over this otherwise by-the-numbers season-ender.
