Casting is complete for Mint, the debut television series from Scrapper filmmaker Charlotte Regan. Produced by House Productions and Fearless Minds for BBC One and iPlayer, the darkly comic drama has enlisted Emma Laird (from Mayor of Kingstown), Sam Riley (Firebrand), Laura Fraser (Breaking Bad), Lewis Gribben (Black Mirror), Lindsay Duncan (Sherwood), and musician Ben Coyle-Larner (Loyle Carner) in his first acting role.

Here’s the Lowdown: Mint focuses on the inner workings of a dominant crime family, told through Regan’s distinct style. Laird plays Shannon, the romantic daughter searching for love under the shadow of her gangster father Dylan (Riley), mother Cat (Fraser), brother Luke (Gribben), and grandmother Ollie (Duncan). Coyle-Larner plays Arran, whose arrival disrupts Shannon’s world. The eight-part series is currently filming in Glasgow.

What This Means Now: With the cast in place, production is underway on this BBC project. The series aims to offer a different perspective on the crime genre, focusing on family and a young woman’s coming-of-age within a violent environment. The inclusion of Loyle Carner is a notable piece of casting.

The Bigger Picture: The BBC is backing a writer-director with a clear artistic voice, fresh off the success of her film Scrapper. Mint seeks to blend dark comedy with drama, looking at themes of love, family loyalty, and finding oneself within extraordinary and dangerous circumstances. The collaboration between Regan, House Productions, and a strong cast suggests ambitions for a high-quality, unconventional drama.
