ESPN’s acclaimed documentary series, 30 for 30, presents its latest instalment, False Positive, looking into the life of former track and field superstar Butch Reynolds. The film, directed by Ismail Al-Amin, premieres on 11 June 2024, as part of the summer slate of five new documentaries in the series.

False Positive explores the controversial drug test that upended Reynolds’ career and forever changed his life. In the summer of 1990, Reynolds, then at the peak of his athletic prowess, underwent a drug test in Monaco that returned a positive result. This led to his suspension by the IAAF, casting a long shadow over his legacy.

The documentary investigates the facts of the case, shedding light on systemic flaws within sports governance and the enduring impact of false accusations on an athlete’s reputation and mental health. It raises questions about the accuracy of the test results and the subsequent fallout, which saw Reynolds’ name tarnished and his career derailed.

The film traces Reynolds’ journey from his childhood in Akron, Ohio, to global fame as one of the biggest track and field stars. It highlights his talent and prime form, only to see it all abruptly interrupted by the positive drug test. The scandal triggered a lengthy battle for Reynolds to clear his name and restore his reputation, a fight that continues to this day.
