Expedition Files “Code Breakers” (Discovery, Wednesday, December 18, 2024)

So, Discovery’s “Expedition Files” thinks it’s cracked the Zodiac Killer case, found Forrest Fenn’s treasure, and decoded the Voynich Manuscript, all in one episode. Let’s just say I’m mildly skeptical. I appreciate ambition, but swinging for the fences on three of history’s most notorious unsolved mysteries feels a tad, shall we say, overconfident?

This Wednesday’s “Code Breakers” apparently identifies a prime Zodiac suspect, a claim sure to generate both buzz and intense scrutiny from armchair detectives (and probably some actual detectives, too). Let’s just say I’ll believe it when I see some concrete evidence beyond Josh Gates dramatically pointing at a map.

Then there’s the matter of Forrest Fenn’s hidden treasure, the subject of countless expeditions and internet theories. “Expedition Files” is ready to reveal the supposed location, which, if true, will either validate years of obsessive searching or lead to a whole lot of disappointed treasure hunters.

And finally, the Voynich Manuscript. This centuries-old book, filled with indecipherable text and bizarre illustrations, has baffled cryptographers and scholars for ages. Now, “Expedition Files” suggests it has decoded information about…wait for it…the origins of life itself. Sure, why not? At this point, they might as well throw in the location of Atlantis and the recipe for Coca-Cola while they’re at it.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m a sucker for a good mystery. But the sheer volume of revelations packed into a single episode of “Expedition Files” makes me suspicious. Is this genuine investigative journalism or just sensationalized storytelling? Tune in Wednesday at 9 PM on Discovery to decide for yourself. Just don’t come crying to me when the Zodiac Killer turns out to be a time-traveling garden gnome.
