Josh Gates, the perpetually curious explorer, returns with a new episode of Expedition Files, aiming to tackle some of history’s most enduring mysteries. This time, he’s setting his sights on the Shroud of Turin, the controversial linen cloth some believe to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. Gates and his team will apply modern technology to the ancient artifact, hoping to shed some light, or perhaps just more ambiguity, on its origins.

Gates is also turning his attention to a collection of purported ghost photos from the 1800s. Using present-day analytical techniques, he’ll attempt to separate fact from fiction (or at least from clever Victorian-era trickery). Whether these spectral images will stand up to scrutiny remains to be seen, but the potential for some spooky revelations is undeniable.

In another segment, Gates finally reveals the identity of the individual behind the Georgia Guidestones, a mysterious granite monument inscribed with messages in multiple languages. The guidestones have been the subject of much speculation and conspiracy theorizing, and uncovering the person responsible for their creation is sure to generate further discussion. Expedition Files continues its quest to find answers to some of history’s most perplexing questions on Discovery, Wednesday, January 1, 2024, at 9:00 PM.
