Extraordinary Portraits with Bill Bailey: Marva & Lionel (BBC One, Friday, March 7, 2025)

Extraordinary Portraits Key Art

Bill Bailey, that purveyor of the whimsically wonderful, returns with his mission to celebrate the unsung heroes among us. This time, “Extraordinary Portraits” turns its attention to the quiet heroism of foster parents. Forget capes and tights; these folks deal with teenage angst and midnight fridge raids. Frankly, that’s far more terrifying. Bailey introduces us to Marva and Lionel, a Birmingham couple who have opened their hearts and home to almost 200 teenagers over three decades. Two hundred. Let that sink in.

The artistic challenge falls to Chloe Cox, a self-taught painter with a royal commission under her belt. But Cox is after something more substantial than gilded frames and polite applause. She wants to create art that genuinely reflects the fabric of society. Can she truly capture the spirit of these extraordinary caregivers? And will Marva and Lionel connect with the final piece?

Beyond the artistic endeavor, the series consistently reminds us of the power of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Marva and Lionel chose to foster to give teenagers a safe and loving environment, a small act with a monumental impact. “Extraordinary Portraits” is a gentle nudge towards recognising the quiet strength that shapes our communities. Join Bill Bailey on BBC One, Friday, March 7, 2025, at 7:30 pm for what’s sure to be a heartwarming and thought-provoking half-hour.
