Filming Begins on Australian Ghosts Adaptation

Ghosts Australia Key Art

Filming has started in Western Australia for Ghosts Australia, the local take on the hit UK and US comedy series. Paramount Australia, BBC Studios Productions Australia, and Screenwest are behind the project, which stars Tamala and Rowan Witt as a couple who inherit a haunted house filled with spirits from across the nation’s history.

Here’s the Lowdown: The eight-episode comedy series follows Kate (Tamala) and Sean (Rowan Witt) as they unexpectedly acquire the huge, rundown country mansion “Ramshead Manor.” Their plans to turn it into a boutique hotel hit a snag: it’s already occupied by a mixed group of ghosts who died there over the centuries. When a near-death experience gives Kate the ability to see the spirits, she and Sean must manage the renovation, their relationship, and the needs of their new spectral housemates: Eileen (Mandy McElhinney), Gideon (Brent Hill), Miranda (Ines English), Lindy (Michelle Brasier), Joon (George Zhao), and Satan (Jackson Tozer).

What This Means Now: This production brings a successful international comedy format down under, tailoring it with Australian historical figures and humour. The strong cast and experienced creative team, including directors Christiaan Van Vuuren and Madeleine Dyer, along with lead writer Josh Mapleston, point to a quality production set for both Network 10 and Paramount+.

The Bigger Picture: Ghosts Australia joins a growing international family of versions (including UK, US, German, French, and Greek), showing the format’s wide appeal. The production is a significant project for the Western Australian screen industry, backed by funding from Screenwest. Viewers can anticipate the uniquely Australian ghostly antics premiering on Paramount+ Australia and Network 10 later this year.
