Florida Heat Episode 4 (A&E, Wednesday, January 15, 2025)

Florida Heat Key Art

Is Florida inherently more chaotic than other states, or does it just seem that way thanks to the abundance of police bodycam footage readily available? A&E’s “Florida Heat” continues its sun-drenched, adrenaline-fueled examination of the Sunshine State’s particular brand of law enforcement, this time tackling gators, guns, and the ever-present threat of drive-thru disturbances.

In this second episode of the evening, expect the usual assortment of bizarre Floridian encounters. A parking lot gator sighting, as routine for Florida police as jaywalking tickets are elsewhere, kicks things off. Then, a high-speed chase segues into a gun bust, a testament to the versatility required of the state’s finest. And, because this is Florida, a drive-thru disturbance rounds out the evening’s entertainment. It’s unclear whether this involves misplaced orders or something more sinister, but knowing Florida, it could be anything from a rogue iguana to a full-blown waffle fry-related meltdown.

“Florida Heat” differentiates itself from other reality cop shows by its broad scope, following officers from multiple departments across the state. This offers a wider view of Florida’s varied ecosystems, both natural and criminal. While the gators and high-speed pursuits may draw viewers in, it’s the glimpse into the everyday lives of these officers that provides the show’s underlying, if somewhat absurd, foundation. After all, where else would you see an officer calmly wrangling a reptile one minute and then chasing down a speeding vehicle the next? Only in Florida.
