Fugitive Hunters Mexico returns with an episode, titled “Catch Me If You Can,” and a triple dose of cross-border crime. The series, which follows an elite Mexican police unit tasked with capturing American fugitives, throws a wide net this week, focusing on three separate cases that range from the tragically predictable to the unsettlingly creepy.
First up, we have a Chicago teenager, wanted for murder, who apparently believes Tijuana is some sort of legal black hole. Newsflash, kid: It’s not. This case has that unfortunate air of inevitability about it, a grim reminder of youthful folly mixed with deadly consequences. Then there’s the Nevada man, pursued for sexually harassing women and girls. It’s hard to muster any sympathy for this guy, and one can only hope his capture brings some measure of relief to his victims.
The third case, which sees this group doing the actual legwork in finding the criminal, involves a drug trafficker who previously slipped through the unit’s fingers. This is the “redemption” arc of the episode, the chance for the team to right a past wrong.
The interesting, if somewhat understated, element of Fugitive Hunters Mexico is the collaboration between US agencies (FBI, DEA, US Marshals) and their Mexican counterparts. It’s a glimpse into the often-unseen cooperation that happens behind the headlines, a pragmatic partnership born of necessity.
