The 2023 Kentucky Derby was marred by the deaths of seven horses before the event even started. In the days that followed, five more horses died, and deaths also occurred at the Preakness and Belmont races. This raised concerns about the safety of racehorses and led to calls for changes within the sport.

The New York Times has produced a documentary called “Broken Horses” to examine the issues and practices that have led to frequent breakdowns and deaths of racehorses. The documentary, which features confidential documents, recordings, and exclusive interviews, delves into the business and political forces that influence the sport and resist reforms to reduce horse deaths.
