Game Changers: When Duty Calls

Game Changers Key Art

Discovery’s Game Changers sets its sights on the blockbuster video game franchise Call of Duty in its upcoming episode, “When Duty Calls.” This installment looks to explore the unlikely journey of the game, from its surprising Hollywood connections to its current global dominance. Forget what you think you know about virtual warfare – this episode aims to unearth the real-world drama behind the pixels.

Turns out, Call of Duty might owe a debt of gratitude to Steven Spielberg. Yes, that Steven Spielberg. The episode will highlight Spielberg’s influence on the game’s creation, a detail likely to raise a few eyebrows (and maybe inspire some interesting Spielberg-themed mods). The story then shifts to Tulsa, Oklahoma, home to a video game company instrumental in Call of Duty’s rise. We’re introduced to a group of gamers known as the “Gang of Four,” whose contributions were, well, game-changing.

But it’s not all rose-tinted nostalgia and camaraderie. “When Duty Calls” also aims to examine the less glamorous side of the Call of Duty saga: the tough decisions, the cutthroat dealings, the controversies that bubbled under the surface as the game clawed its way to the top of the gaming food chain.

Whether you’re a seasoned Call of Duty veteran or just someone who occasionally picks up a controller, this episode looks to offer a glimpse behind the curtain of a pop culture behemoth. Perhaps it’s less about the game itself and more about the humans who brought virtual war to the masses. If Game Changers delivers, we might just find ourselves questioning how much we really knew about one of the world’s most popular video games.

Game Changers: When Duty Calls airs Tuesday, November 19, at 9:01 PM on Discovery.
