On their way to Savannah, the five students—Molly McCollum, Clarke Jones, Jane McArdle, Eleanor Cart, and Kaitlyn Iannace—witnessed a white SUV leave the road and roll into a creek. Without hesitation, they sprang into action, turning their car around and rushing to the scene. They found the SUV submerged in the creek, rapidly sinking further into the water.
McCollum and her friends stood on top of the submerged car and managed to open the heavy water-logged door. Together, they pulled the mother, Cori Craft, and her two children, aged eight and four, out of the vehicle. The youngest child was trapped in his seatbelt and had been underwater for several minutes.
Jones, a former lifeguard, performed CPR on the youngest child, who eventually started breathing and crying. The students’ quick thinking and bravery were hailed by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, who expressed gratitude for their timely intervention.
The students, shaken but relieved, resumed their journey to Savannah, reflecting on the traumatic experience. Their actions were recognised by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who honoured them for their heroism. The University of Georgia’s president, Jere Morehead, also issued a proclamation, praising their “exemplary act of courage and teamwork.”
