So, the Golden Globes happened. Again. CBS aired the 82nd annual ceremony on Sunday, January 5, 2025, an event described by some as “sometimes cringe-worthy, occasionally funny, and mostly uncomfortable.” Sounds about right. But hey, awards were handed out, egos were stroked, and somebody probably tripped on the red carpet. Amidst the chaos, two clear victors emerged: the historical drama series Shōgun sweeping the television categories, and the drama film Emilia Pérez making a strong showing.
FX and Hulu can pat themselves on the back, as Shōgun’s impressive haul included Best Television Series – Drama. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai took home the lead acting awards in the drama category, while Tadanobu Asano snagged Best Supporting Actor.
Meanwhile, on the slightly less serious side of the television landscape, HBO’s Hacks snagged the Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy award, with Jean Smart adding another trophy to her shelf for her performance. Over on FX/Hulu again, Jeremy Allen White continued The Bear’s awards run, winning for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy series. And in the limited series arena, Baby Reindeer secured the top spot, with Jessica Gunning earning a Supporting Actress award.
Elsewhere in the TV universe, Colin Farrell’s turn in The Penguin garnered him a win, while Jodie Foster was recognized for her work in True Detective: Night Country.
The film side saw victories for The Brutalist, A Real Pain, A Different Man, The Substance, I’m Still Here, and Flow. Nikki Glaser’s comedic contributions to the ceremony were singled out for praise – always good when the host doesn’t completely bomb. And Wicked soared away with the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, likely fueled by the pre-release hype machine. But the night belonged to Shōgun.
