Channel 4’s “Grand Designs” returns this Wednesday with a barn conversion that could be either a triumph of architectural ingenuity or a descent into a costly money pit. Kevin McCloud is on hand, as always, to chronicle the trials and tribulations of Sarah and Pip as they attempt to transform a 150-year-old barn into a modern, five-bedroom home.
The project isn’t without its hurdles. Not only do Sarah and Pip face a mountain of planning restrictions, but they’re also building on a scheduled ancient monument. The fragile structure itself presents a considerable challenge. Original features like the old brick columns, walls, and timber gable end turn out to be far too unstable and come tumbling down as the work gets underway.
Working with a budget of £420k, the couple’s plan is to retain as much of the original barn as possible to save on costs. But with unexpected structural issues and differing visions for the final design, tensions rise between Sarah and Pip.
Will they manage to create their dream home while keeping the budget (and their relationship) intact? Find out on “Grand Designs,” airing Wednesday, April 2nd at 9:00 PM on Channel 4.
