Culinary competitions are a dime a dozen these days, but Great British Menu consistently manages to be a cut above. It’s partly the rotating cast of talented chefs, partly the focus on regional cuisine, but mostly it’s the sheer Britishness of it all. This week, the North West regional finals take center stage.
Two top chefs, having survived the previous rounds, must recreate their meticulously crafted six-course menus. This time, however, the pressure is truly on. They face a formidable judging panel: Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge, former champion Lorna McNee, and comedian/food podcaster Ed Gamble. And just to add another dash of gravitas, guest judge Margaret Aspinall, a tireless campaigner for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, will also offer her critique.
The chefs are competing for the honor of representing the North West in the national finals and ultimately for the chance to cook a four-course banquet for a high-profile guest. It’s a grueling process, but the rewards are significant.
Great British Menu airs Thursdays at 8:00 PM on BBC Two.
