Halfway through the current Great British Menu heat, the tension in the kitchen is thicker than clotted cream. Three South West chefs remain, each vying for the coveted spot at the Blenheim Palace banquet. This week, they’re facing off with mains and desserts, and their interpretations of “notable Britons” are, shall we say, interesting.
A forerib of beef honors cheesemaker Edith Cannon. A blackcurrant, honey, and lemon sorbet pays tribute to nursing pioneer Princess Campbell. And a white chocolate dome with coffee and caramelized mousse is dedicated to architect Sir Christopher Wren. (Was he known for his sweet tooth? Architectural history remains silent on that point.)
Presiding over this culinary clash of titans is Simon Rogan, whose discerning palate will decide who stays and who packs their knives. For one chef, this is the end of the road. For the others, the journey to Blenheim continues. May the best dish (and the most historically accurate dessert) win.
Great British Menu airs Wednesday, February 5, 2025 on BBC Two.
