Michael Portillo’s railway adventures continue this Wednesday on “Great British Railway Journeys.” His exploration of the Weald takes him to the scenic Surrey Hills, where he blends historical insights with scientific discoveries and a touch of outdoor adventure.
Starting in Dorking, Portillo heads to the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, a hub for cutting-edge space exploration. There, he gets a chance to handle a model of the Rover designed to traverse the surface of Mars, offering a glimpse into the future of planetary exploration. Back on solid ground, Portillo follows in the footsteps of Victorian ramblers, learning about Walker Miles, author of a popular guidebook that encouraged city dwellers to explore the countryside by rail.
Joining a group of adults with disabilities who help maintain the pathways in the Surrey Hills, Portillo witnesses the power of community and accessibility in preserving the natural beauty of the region. His journey ends in Lingfield, where he observes native British wildlife, including polecats, otters, badgers, and a majestic European eagle owl. “Great British Railway Journeys” airs Wednesday, April 9 at 6:30 PM on BBC Two.
