Great Coastal Railway Journeys, 19 April 2024, BBC Two, “Conwy to Colwyn Bay”
Great Coastal Railway Journeys returns with an exploration of the picturesque shores of north Wales, as Michael Portillo takes viewers on a journey from Conwy to Colwyn Bay. In this episode, Portillo continues his adventure along the Welsh coast, visiting historic towns and enjoying breathtaking scenery.
The episode airing on BBC Two on Friday 19 April, begins with Portillo’s arrival in the medieval walled town of Conwy. Here, he visits the impressive 13th-century Conwy Castle, built by the conquering English king, Edward I. From Conwy, Portillo travels into the foothills of the Carneddau mountain range, taking in breathtaking views over 27,000 acres of rugged open land.
The Victorian resort of Llandudno is the next stop on Portillo’s itinerary. He scales the dramatic limestone headland to investigate one of the most important Bronze Age copper mines in Europe. Continuing his journey east, Portillo reaches Colwyn Bay, a popular seaside resort. While the long sweeping promenade offers stunning views over Liverpool Bay and the Irish Sea, Portillo also discovers a transformational project underway to create a new beach.
There are stunning landscapes, insights into local history, and a celebration of the unique charm of the Welsh coast.
