Michael Portillo continues his exploration of European rail routes in “Great Continental Railway Journeys,” this time venturing into the heart of Normandy, France. This Thursday’s episode, “Bayeux to Argentan,” takes viewers on a journey steeped in history and heritage, from the site of one of the most famous battles in history to a world-renowned center of equestrian excellence.

In Bayeux, Portillo begins his journey with a visit to the iconic Bayeux Tapestry, a 70-meter-long embroidered cloth depicting William the Conqueror’s 1066 invasion of England. From there, he travels to the Normandy coastline, recalling the pivotal D-Day landings, even crossing Gold Beach in a 1943 Willys Jeep. He also pays his respects at the Bayeux War Cemetery, the final resting place for over 4,600 soldiers who lost their lives in World War II.

The journey culminates near Argentan, where Portillo visits the Haras du Pin, France’s national stud farm. This 300-year-old estate, known as the “Versailles of the Horse,” takes us into the world of equestrian breeding and training. Portillo even gets a taste of competitive carriage driving, experiencing the thrill of the World Championships. “Great Continental Railway Journeys” airs on BBC Two at 6:30 PM on Thursday, April 3rd.
