Michael Portillo’s “Great Continental Railway Journeys” chugs along this Tuesday, taking viewers on a scenic and culturally rich tour of Brittany, France. Starting in Brest, a major naval port, Michael explores the region’s history and its connection to the sea.
Aboard the Pourquoi Pas, part of France’s oceanographic fleet, he learns about the work of marine biologists and their use of research submersibles to study the mysteries of deep-sea life. From the depths of the ocean, Michael heads to a traditional Breton boulangerie to try his hand at making kouign-amann, a deliciously sweet and buttery cake.
His journey continues to Guingamp, where he attempts to master the steps of Breton dancing alongside a troupe preparing for the regional championships. No doubt, there will be some entertaining missteps along the way.
“Great Continental Railway Journeys” airs on BBC Two this Tuesday at 6:30 PM.
