Great Continental Railway Journeys Key Art

Michael Portillo continues his Croatian rail adventure this week, his Bradshaw’s guide in hand, ready to uncover the historical and cultural gems of the Dalmatian coast. “Great Continental Railway Journeys” takes viewers on a picturesque trip from Knin to Split, stopping at towns steeped in history and tradition.

In Zadar, a coastal city with a rich Venetian past, Portillo explores the legacy of trade and culture, even sampling the local specialty – maraschino cherry liqueur. Moving on to Sibenik, he uncovers the town’s surprisingly modern history, discovering how it became a pioneer in electric street lighting, inspired by the inventions of none other than Nikola Tesla in the 1890s. He’ll visit a tailor in Trogir trying out a traditional Dalmatian suit.

The journey culminates in Split, where Portillo visits the magnificent Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St Domnius, gaining insights into the enduring influence of Catholicism in Croatian culture.

The train departs this Wednesday, March 12th at 6:30 PM on BBC Two.
