Michael Portillo, ever the intrepid traveler, embarks on a new Balkan adventure this Monday in “Great Continental Railway Journeys.” Armed with his trusty Bradshaw’s 1913 Continental Railway Guide, he kicks off Season 8 with a Croatian and Bosnian and Herzegovinian escapade, beginning with the historic city of Pula.
From facing off against modern-day gladiators in Pula’s remarkably preserved 2,000-year-old amphitheater to taking on the surprisingly complex role of stationmaster at Vodnjan, Portillo immerses himself in the region’s rich past and present. This episode isn’t all ancient history and train timetables, though. Portillo also finds time to explore the more bucolic side of Croatian life with a visit to an organic olive farm.
The journey continues with a touch of presidential flair as Portillo travels in a Cadillac once used by Marshal Josip Tito to the former Yugoslav leader’s summer residence. The episode culminates in Buzet, where Portillo examines well-preserved 15th-century frescoes depicting the “Dance of Death.”
“Great Continental Railway Journeys” is a blend of history, culture, and the simple pleasures of train travel, all filtered through Portillo’s distinctive brand of enthusiastic curiosity. Tune in to BBC Two this Monday at 6:30 PM for “Pula to Pazin.”
