Michael Portillo’s ever-charming “Great Continental Railway Journeys” chugs along this Thursday with a particularly scenic installment. Trading his usual Bradshaw’s guide for a Swiss travelogue, Portillo sets off from Rotkreuz, destined for Brienz, and taking in some truly breathtaking Alpine views along the way.
This episode features a ride on the Pilatus Railway, a marvel of engineering that conquers a near-vertical 48 percent gradient. Expect stunning visuals as Portillo ascends the mountainside, no doubt marveling at the ingenuity of this unique railway. The trip also includes a stay at the historic Grand Hotel Giessbach, a beautiful example of 19th-century architecture. Portillo uncovers the story of how the Swiss people rallied together to save the hotel from ruin, a testament to their appreciation of history and heritage.
But it’s not all about scenic vistas and grand hotels. In Rotkreuz, Portillo gets a glimpse into the future of healthcare with a visit to a major biotech company. He also gets a chance to try his hand at a traditional Swiss craft at the Swiss Woodcarving Museum, attempting to detail the cheek of a king.
Tune in to BBC Two on Thursday, March 27th at 6:30 PM for Michael Portillo’s latest railway adventure.
