Great Performances: Girl from the North Country (PBS, Friday, May 23, 2025)

Great Performances Key Art

PBS’ “Great Performances” series takes a detour down Highway 61 this Friday with a presentation of “Girl from the North Country.” This isn’t your typical jukebox musical; it’s a soulful story set in 1934 Duluth, Minnesota, during the depths of the Great Depression. Within the walls of a Depression-era guesthouse, where rooms are rented out to down-on-their-luck souls looking for temporary refuge, something else is being offered: a hefty dose of hope.

Writer and director Conor McPherson weaves a tale of resilience and human connection, using the music of Bob Dylan not as mere background noise, but as an integral part of the narrative tapestry. The play presents 20 reimagined Dylan classics, spanning his career from “Like a Rolling Stone” to “Forever Young”, “All Along the Watchtower” and “Hurricane”, each song adding depth and emotional resonance to the story.
