A double bill of Grotesquerie brings more unsettling chills to FX tonight. But first, a recap of the mind-bending twist from last week: Episode 7 pulled the rug out from under viewers, revealing that Lois (Niecy Nash), not her husband Marshall (Courtney B. Vance), had been in a coma the entire time. The seemingly mundane reality of the first six episodes? All a dream.
The characters, though based on real people in Lois’s life, were distorted, Wizard of Oz-style, by her subconscious. And to top it all off, Lois awoke from her coma just as dream-Lois blew off dream-Megan’s (Micaela Diamond) head. It’s the kind of narrative curveball that can leave viewers either intrigued or infuriated, a gamble that could either send the series to greater heights or send it careening off the rails.
As always the synopses provided by FX are alarming light on detail so we don’t too much but in episode 8, Detective Lois Tryon finally accepts outside help.
Then in “Episode 9,” Lois is contemplatinga new future. Given the grim tone of the series thus far, one suspects this future isn’t filled with sunshine and rainbows.
Grotesquerie airs Wednesday October 23, 2024 at 10.00pm and 11.00pm on FX.
