Grease monkey turned adventurer, Guy Martin, kicks off his new series, Guy Martin: Proper Jobs, by tackling one of Britain’s most perilous professions: trawlerman. Forget cushy office jobs, Martin’s diving headfirst into the deep end, joining the crew of the William of Ladram out of Brixham, Devon, for a four-day fishing expedition. Viewers can expect a no-nonsense look at the hard graft, camaraderie, and sheer bravery it takes to make a living from the sea.
In this premiere episode, airing Sunday, January 26, 2025, at 8:00 PM on U, Martin will get a crash course in all things trawling. He’ll be learning to handle heavy nets, sort and gut slippery fish, and, most importantly, trying not to get swept overboard. While Martin’s hometown of Grimsby was once a bustling fishing port, the industry has dwindled, leaving no working trawlers. This adds a personal dimension to Martin’s experience, as he connects with a fading way of life.
Under the watchful eye of “Lizard,” the boat’s most seasoned crew member, Martin will be thrown into the thick of it. Expect close calls, fishy mishaps, and plenty of Martin’s trademark dry wit as he confronts the challenges of life at sea. It’s not just about hauling in the catch; it’s about understanding the people who dedicate their lives to this demanding profession.
Will Martin rise to the challenge and prove he’s more than just a speed-obsessed mechanic? Tune in to U this Sunday to find out if he can handle the high seas or if he’ll be begging for solid ground.
