Guy Fieri gathers another group of chef pals at his ranch this Saturday for what Food Network describes as a spontaneous Sunday cookoff, this time centered around the humble grain. The title, “Grains on the Brain,” might induce a slight groan, but the lineup of chefs – Antonia Lofaso, Maneet Chauhan, Stephanie Izard, and Jonathon Sawyer – suggests the food itself could overcome the clunky theme. Fieri challenges them to create flavorful, accessible dishes, presumably proving grains are more than just side dishes or breakfast staples.
Lofaso offers up a Quinoa Risotto and a Coconut Chia Pudding, perhaps aiming for comfort with a healthy-ish twist. Chauhan digs into Indian street food with Bhel Puri Chaat and follows with Whole Wheat and Sorghum Aloo Paratha, bringing some welcome spice. Izard gets creative with Pork and Barley Spring Rolls and her take on Chicken Tacu Tacu, a Peruvian rice and bean dish. Sawyer rounds things out with Crispy Falafel Verde and Parmesan Barley Socarrat, the latter hinting at that desirable crispy bottom layer found in paella.
It’s the usual “Guy’s Ranch Kitchen” setup: talented chefs cooking in a relaxed environment, sharing tips, and trying to one-up each other while Fieri provides commentary. The focus here is meant to be on recipes viewers can replicate, using grains in perhaps unexpected ways. Whether the results are truly revolutionary or just tasty variations remains to be seen, but the talent involved makes it worth a look for cooking inspiration.
“Guy’s Ranch Kitchen” airs Saturday, April 12, at 12:00 PM on Food Network.
