I’m not going to pretend I understand the cultural obsession with wizards and whatnot, but clearly, somebody does, and that somebody is the Food Network. Their latest concoction, “Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking,” continues its run with an episode set in the bustling commercial district of Diagon Alley.
In “Diagon Alley,” the remaining teams (because of course it’s a competition) face the daunting task of crafting 50 – yes, fifty – identical handheld desserts. These aren’t your average cupcakes, mind you. Each sweet treat must embody the spirit of Diagon Alley and, because, mere flavor isn’t enough, incorporate some sort of “interactive, magical element.” I shudder to think. Perhaps self-stirring pudding? Exploding eclairs? One can only hope for a minimal level of pyrotechnics.
Adding to the already heightened sense of whimsy, the contestants will present their creations to a crowd of “Harry Potter” enthusiasts on the actual Diagon Alley set from the films.
While these fans will cast their votes, the ultimate judgment rests with resident food personalities Carla Hall and Jozef Youssef, who bear the responsibility of deciding which team will be magically banished from the tent… I mean, set. Presiding over this spectacle are none other than James and Oliver Phelps, the Weasley twins themselves.
“Diagon Alley” has got the requisite “Harry Potter” trappings, the slightly stressful baking competition element, and the promise of vaguely magical desserts. Will it be good? Who knows? Will it be watched by millions? Probably. Such is the enduring power of wands and, now, apparently, whisks.
“Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” airs Thursday, November 28, at 8:00 PM on Food Network.
