HBO Doco “The Stroll” Premieres June 21

Coinciding with LGBTQ Pride Month, HBO’s premiere of THE STROLL, a documentary directed by Kristen Lovell and Zackary Drucker (“The Lady and The Dale” on HBO), will air on Wednesday, June 21 at 9:00 PM ET/PT and can be viewed on the HBO Go app. The film, Lovell’s directorial debut, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews.

What is The Stroll about

Director Kristen Lovell was let go after she relocated to New York City in the ’90s and began transitioning. Kristen, like many transgender women of color in this era, started doing sex work to make ends meet in a place called “The Stroll” in the Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan, where trans women congregated and formed a deep camaraderie to protect each other from harassment and violence.

Kristen’s intimate narration and interviews bring to life an astounding array of archival material of bygone New York from the 1970s through the early 2000s, reuniting her sisters to tell this essential New York story from their first-hand experiences. Although THE STROLL primarily focuses on transgender issues, it also provides a shocking account of gentrification in New York City as a result of Mayor Giuliani’s “quality of life” initiatives, which increased police presence and forced sex workers out of the area. Kristen and her sisters fought back against the forces that threatened their survival. Activists have recently reversed legislation dubbed “Walking While Trans,” which had allowed police profiling and harassment of transgender people for decades, and while they no longer have “The Stroll,” they are at the center of a movement to protect their rights. THE STROLL serves as a reminder that trans women of color and sex workers are thriving in the modern era of activism and visibility thanks to their tenacity, community organizing, and sisterhood.
