“High Potential” continues to improve, with “Survival Mode” delivering a solid episode that leans into the core relationship between Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata). Their begrudging respect, bordering on sibling-like bickering, provides a welcome anchor for the procedural elements.
Karadec focusing on actual detective work, rather than constantly managing Morgan, is a definite plus. The show benefits from moving beyond the initial world-building and letting the central dynamic drive the narrative.
Thankfully, supporting characters Daphne (Javicia Leslie) and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) are no longer relegated to the sidelines, though Oz deserves more than the scraps he’s given. Captain Selena’s (Judy Reyes) increased presence adds to the precinct’s internal dynamics, though the dangling plot thread of Morgan’s missing partner feels like a missed opportunity.
The episode’s emotional weight rests squarely on Morgan’s shoulders, as she channels sleep deprivation and maternal instinct into a fierce, protective energy as she and Karadec investigate the missing children’s case. While the “troubled genius” trope is familiar, Kaitlin Olson’s performance sells Morgan’s internal struggles. Her raw emotion and surprising vulnerability stand out, even if the overall narrative beats are predictable.
“High Potential” is settling into a comfortable rhythm, even if it’s still network TV procedural fare. The core relationship and Olson’s performance are the clear strengths, but the show needs to capitalize on its supporting cast and lingering plot threads to reach its full potential.
High Potential airs Tuesday nights on ABC.
