Hulu has released the trailer for its original documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, premiering on October 18th. The film follows the rise of the indie rock duo Tegan and Sara, known for their confessional lyrics and strong connection with the LGBTQ+ community. As they built a supportive fanbase, a dangerous incident in 2011 disrupted their world, when Tegan’s personal files were hacked, leading to a disturbing catfishing scandal.
The documentary examines how an imposter, dubbed “Fake Tegan,” used stolen information to deceive fans, causing widespread mistrust and anxiety within the community. Tegan now partners with filmmaker Erin Lee Carr to revisit the events, uncover new victims, and search for the person responsible for the prolonged psychological manipulation. The story intertwines the original investigation with the current search for answers.
The documentary blends personal narrative, fan testimonies, and behind-the-scenes archives to reveal the deeper emotional toll of the incident.
Directed and produced by Erin Lee Carr, the documentary is a Story Syndicate production in association with Carr Lot Productions. Tegan and Sara serve as executive producers alongside Dan Cogan and Liz Garbus.
