Pickpockets, illicit romances, and high-stakes surgeries return Down Under. Hulu Australia has officially renewed The Artful Dodger for a second season, ensuring more historical hijinks with a medical twist. Fans of Thomas Brodie-Sangster’s surprisingly adept surgeon/criminal, Jack Dawkins (aka Dodger), can breathe easy—he’ll be back, scalpel and stolen goods in hand.
David Thewlis’s Fagin and Maia Mitchell’s Lady Belle will also reprise their roles, likely continuing their complicated dance of mentorship, manipulation, and forbidden affection. Season two will again tackle Dodger’s double life, juggling the pressures of 19th-century operating rooms with the thrills of thievery. His unconventional romance with Lady Belle, a storyline unlikely to get any less convoluted, will be back.
Returning writers James McNamara, Kate Mulvany, Dan Knight, and Miranda Tapsell will pen the eight-episode season, with Ben Young and Gracie Otto in the director’s chairs, guided by the experienced hand of consulting director Jeffrey Walker. The new season plans to inject fresh blood, or at least new faces, with several Australian and New Zealand actors joining the cast, alongside a sprinkling of promised cameos. Check out the season one trailer below.
Filming is slated for 2025 at Sydney’s historic Callan Park, presumably offering an authentic backdrop for all the upcoming thievery, snappy banter, life-or-death medical procedures, and romantically tangled misadventures. If the producers are to be believed, we’re in for even more of everything that made the first season…well, what the first season was.
The Artful Dodger airs on Hulu Australia.
