Hulu’s The Other Black Girl Cancelled

The Other Black Girl

Hulu’s satirical comedy-drama series The Other Black Girl has been canceled after one season. The show, produced by Onyx Collective, premiered on September 13, 2023, and all 10 episodes were released at once.

Based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris, the series centers on Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel), an editorial assistant who is initially excited to have another Black woman, Hazel- May McCall (Ashleigh Murray), working at her company. However, as Hazel’s star rises, Nella uncovers sinister secrets and disturbing truths about her employer.

The series received positive reviews from critics, with an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 68 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised the engaging cast, clever storytelling, and exploration of weighty topics, including racism and power dynamics in the corporate world.

Despite the show’s critical acclaim, it appears that Hulu has opted not to renew the series for a second season. This decision comes amid a broader trend of streaming services cutting costs and reducing their scripted slates.

The cancellation of The Other Black Girl marks the first time a scripted series from Onyx Collective, a Disney division focused on underrepresented communities, has been canceled.

While The Other Black Girl will not be returning, Onyx Collective has several other projects in the works, including the already-renewed series Reasonable Doubt and Unprisoned, as well as the upcoming comedy How to Die Alone.
